Snowfields, in Australia?

Let’s face it, when you think of skiing locations Australia doesn’t immediately come to mind. But why not? The ski fields are conveniently located from most of the major capital cities; with great terrain, modern snow making facilities, and let’s not forget great parties!
There are two locations to consider within the Australian Alps. Yes it’s true; Australia does have a mountain range known as the Australian Alps (part of the Great Dividing Range) with mountain peaks exceeding 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) where snow fall occurs regularly in the winter months. You’ll need to travel to either south-eastern New South Wales or eastern Victoria.
First up, riding the NSW snowfields.
Charlotte Pass Ski Resort offers stunning views of Mt Kosciuszko and is completely snowbound in winter with access only by oversnow transport. Whilst there you can stay at the historic Kosciuszko Chalet and enjoy a great on-snow experience, however this is not a destination if you’re seeking active nightlife and off-snow entertainment.
Selwyn Snowfields does not offer resort facilities or accommodation on the mountain, so most people stay in the nearby townships of Adaminaby or Talbingo, which is 30 to 40 minutes drive away.
Perisher is Australia and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest resort with a wide range of accommodation, cafes, restaurants, bars, and general resort facilities including a nightclub, supermarket and childcare! The Top Spot Bar offers stunning views and even has live entertainment on Thursdays! Newly opened this season is Curve Bar… why not be the first to review it on TrueLocal?
Thredbo has a vibrant village atmosphere with fantastic night-life and apre ski facilities. An extensive range of self-contained, hotel or lodge style accommodation makes this a popular on-snow location with visitors of all ages. Whilst there why not try some of the many flavours of schnapps at River Rock Cafe in the River Inn or authentic Brazilian style BBQ at Sante Churrasco?
Complete party animals may choose to stay down the road in Jindabyne offering great nightlife to ‘get loose’ and cheap accommodation, such as The Station. Those on a really tight budget may choose to go with a package tour, such as OZ Snow Adventures, where you can enjoy the 200+ jagerbomb dominos show and endure the torture of shared dormitories.
Next post we’ll look at Victoria’s slopes and where to actually buy or hire skis, boards and everything else you’ll need.

Gotta love
I haven’t been to the snow in NSW yet this year. Great post.
I’m off to board NZ end of the month and might do a trip to NSW ski fields late August.Lyndon of Sydney
