Knowing your electorate

Lalor vs Warringah

The Federal election happens this Saturday which means you’re probably sick to death of hearing each party’s promises and swipes at each other. What about the seats each member represents though? Where do the locals there eat and drink?

Leader of the ALP, and incumbent Prime Minister, Julia Gillard has held the Victorian seat of Lalor since 1998. Lalor itself covers suburbs like Melton, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Laverton, Brookfield, Wyndham Vale and more.

So you find yourself in Lalor, hungry - where to eat? If you’re after Thai Fresh Chilli in Laverton is popular amongst the locals and Jakkajans in Werribee is a favourite of an unknown Melbourne chef. Those looking for something a little more exclusive should head to the Werribee Mansion and indulge at Joseph’s Restaurant & Bar.

If all you need is a drink, and maybe some simple pub grub try the Golden Fleece Hotel in Melton. For something bigger and brighter the Werribee Plaza Hotel comes with it’s own nightclub. Or if you just want to drown your sorrows after losing at the track sink into a bar stool at the Racecourse Hotel.

Liberal leader and the man who’s after the country’s top job, Tony Abbott, represents the NSW seat of Warringah. Suburb wise you’re looking at Mosman, Manly, Curl Curl, Freshwater, Brookvale, Balmoral and surrounds. Generally suburbs near the water.

A full day’s eating can be had in Warringah quite easily. In Balgowlah the Full of Beans Café will cover your breakfast and coffee needs. In Manly fill up on meat and seafood at Ribs & Rumps then for dinner try something different with an African feast at Cremorne’s Radio Cairo.

For some unique beer stick around in Manly and try the ales on offer at the 4 Pines Brewing Company. You can also pretend to be sailor in Mosman at the Middle Harbour Yacht Club. If you’re more of a rugby league fan head to the Brookvale Hotel, the closest pub to the Manly Sea Eagles home ground.

Admittedly this list isn’t going to help undecided voters, but hopefully you’ll get a good meal and drink out of it. Where are your favourite spots?
