Four days of Easter

Spinning out at the Easter Show

There’s definitely more to the Easter holidays than stuffing yourself with chocolate eggs and hot cross buns. While doing nothing but eating for 4 days straight is an admirable pursuit you might want to actually get out from under the mountain of chocolate and venture outside.

If you live in Sydney the Royal Easter Show, held at Sydney Showgrounds, features Robosaurus – the giant, robotic dinosaur who devours cars. You also get traditional farm animals, fruit displays, showbags, carnival rides, sideshow alley and overpriced food. It’s not a cheap day out so if you haven’t taken out a loan it might be wise to give it a miss.

With four days off checking out some music is always an option. The Byron Bay Bluesfest happens at the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm over the long weekend. It’s a massive line-up with highlights including the Buena Vista Social Club, Jack Johnson and the John Butler Trio. If Byron is too far Sydney’s Enmore Theatre features UK TV host and keyboardist Jools Holland with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra on Saturday. The same day in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley head to the Tivoli to see LA’s Ozomatli drop hip-hop inspired Latin grooves. For something sporty and rocky head to Wrestlerock at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel.

In terms of real sport the biggest event is the Golden Slipper on Saturday at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse. If you don’t spend all your money at the Easter Show you can lose it on the horses. Brisbane locals can head to the Gabba tonight and see entertaining AFL drinker/commentator Brendan Fevola with the Brisbane Lions take on his former side Carlton. For those who prefer slower ball sports on Good Friday in Sydney the Roosters meet the Broncos at the Football Stadium in the rugby league.

While there’s plenty of ways to entertain oneself a lot of couples choose to test the strength of their relationship with attempts at DIY home renovations. Bunnings and other hardware stores report the Easter break as one of its busiest. Fixing leaky taps, varnishing decks and even full blown kitchen renovations are amongst the most popular tasks. Obviously some people have too much time on their hands.
