Gyms: donor or junkie?

Belinda Humphries on Tuesday Apr 12th, at 03:35 PM

“How’s your training going mate?” is the question posed to me nearly every time I see my friend Robin. I’m working towards running 8km at the Mother’s Day Classic in May. Robin is amazingly supportive yet a little wackier than I - he’s got his eye on a marathon . Yes, that’s 42kms!

Earth Hour: Other ways businesses can battle climate change?

Belinda Humphries on Tuesday Mar 29th, at 09:19 AM

image

On Saturday night I was sitting in a small local restaurant with some friends. Half-past eight came and went without so much as a dimming of lights from any of the restaurants in the plaza for Earth Hour. By the time I’d realised Earth Hour had passed it was around 10pm, and it crossed my mind that turning off the lights for an hour may not be a practical option for all small businesses.

It’s vitally important for all of us to consider the effect of what we’re doing on the future of the planet, and all businesses small and large can take steps to ensure their impact on our environment is minimal. But when a restaurant has five hours of service on a Saturday night, bringing the venue to a standstill for one of those hours might not be an option.

Deciphering the coffee code

Belinda Humphries on Monday Mar 7th, at 01:20 PM

image

Last week in the TrueLocal.com.au office we had quite an animated discussion (read: argument) about coffee which ended in iPhones at 10 paces searching for the real answer to the question: what is the difference between a flat white and a latte?

The purists among you will start talking about ratio of milk to coffee and whether or not there is foam involved. But when there are so many other variables - strong vs weak, decaf vs caffeinated, skim vs whole milk - one can’t help but wonder if the minimal difference between a flat white and a latte really matters that much?

  • I change - it keeps the boys on thier toes raspberry

Somedays its a macciato, somedays a long black with a dash of skim milk, somedays straight long black, and occasionally a skinny flat white. So yeah as long as it has caffine in it its good. Well Caffine and not too much milk.

Thou the last time I went out for brekkie one of my girlfriends scrapped the chocie sprinkles off her cap that should have been a flat raspberry

As for places - my fav in the city have just changed thier beans and Im not a fan. Time to get the group to move to a new place. Might have to do some taste testing…

Let’s not do dinner

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, high tea, low tea, morning tea, brunch. What about elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, supper, and as any self-respecting Lord of the Rings fan will be asking right about now, “What about second breakfast?”

In many cultures eating has had a bit of a paradigm shift from fuelling our bodies, as it did back in caveman days, to being a social event.

How to find a good tradie

Belinda Humphries on Monday Feb 21st, at 04:20 PM

I’m quite fortunate in that everything at my place is in good working order. I’m also a bit of a self-sufficient kind of girl. I know one end of a screwdriver from the other, I can attach ends to a coax lead to make a TV cable and I can unblock my own drains without significant incident - emphasis on the term “significant”.

But I digress. My point is that I don’t often have a need for a tradie, so when the odd thing explodes, falls off or has red wine spilled on it (you smirk, but it happens with strange regularity), how do you find someone who is going to do an efficient, appropriately-priced job?

Escorts rather than florists - is romance dead?

Belinda Humphries on Tuesday Feb 15th, at 02:20 PM

While all of us in the TrueLocal.com.au office were in the throes of Valentine’s Day yesterday we came across some interesting information, and we promise we won’t tell your mum.

We noticed a sharp spike in people looking for adult services, including escort agencies, in the month of February, with the annual peak hitting on February 15. So it seems that after all the cupids and love-hearts of Valentine’s Day have faded we get back to love in a very different sense.

Happy Expectations Day… *ahem* Valentine’s Day everyone!

The other day I received an exasperated SMS from my dear friend Matt, vehemently ruing the day he ever laid eyes on a supermarket self-checkout. He made no secret of the fact his blood pressure rises whenever he hears the robotic phrase “unexpected item in bagging area”.

While Matt is a smart guy and it doesn’t take much to figure these contraptions out, I’ve lost count of other intelligent people I know who are sick of going 10 rounds with these things every time they need to quickly grab a couple of items from the supermarket.

Personally, I adore them. Then again, in the spirit of honesty I will disclose that I am known to be slightly pedantic. I can’t trust another person to pack my groceries – every time I do my bread and eggs are squashed by my milk.

  • I personally hate the self-service machines that are popping up at supermarkets! I want to be able to just put my stuff on the conveyer belt and pay at the end! Why would I want to scan, weigh and bag my only items while paying the same amount of money.  I reckon I should get a 10-20% discount for using these bloody annoying machines!

I have used them 3 times and while I dont find them technically challenging, I find the whole process very annoying. Now I just pick a line with an actual check out chick and wait a little longer.

Nick of St Peters on Monday Feb 14th, at 11:11 AM

  • I don’t mind using them myself. What really annoys me is when the people in front of me do one of 3 things (and it happens...well too often!)
    1) Have about 3,000 items in their trolley but decide that self-service checkout is for them
    2) Don’t know how to use them. Come on - they’ve been in my local shops for over a year now? Can it truly be that every time I go shopping there’s someone who hasn’t used them before?
    3) Know how to use them. Very slowly. V e r y s l o w l y. Or even slower.

I think we need another whole set of self-checkout lines: One for people who won’t bother me, and another for people like me. Surely that’s not asking too much wink

I hereby rename Valentine’s Day

Belinda Humphries on Monday Feb 7th, at 11:01 AM

image

Back in Elizabethan times single ladies would pin bay leaves to their pillows on the eve of Valentine’s Day in the hope they would dream of their future spouse. How times have changed.

Nowadays we celebrate Valentine’s Day with cookie-cutter romance - flowers, chocolates and red cards with standard messages in them.
I’ll step out on a limb here and say Valentine’s Day is now based on the expectation of having our partners buy us something to show how much they care. I hereby rename Valentine’s Day to Expectations Day.

  • I have never been one to buy presents on Valentines day because to me it seems insincere, commercially motivated and generally a horrible and thoughtless idea. I do however subscribe to the idea that this day be used to do something special with your partner. In the past, it has been picnics, beautiful breakfasts, weekends away, etc. I think it should be used to bring the couple closer, not buy them pointless gifts that whither and die.

As a side note, I would never buy a girl Roses as I find them cliched! I do love buying a girl flowers, just not Roses.

Upcabbed?

Belinda Humphries on Tuesday Jan 18th, at 12:31 PM

image

One of the inevitable nightmares of a good night out is getting home at the end of it. A pet loathing of mine is the upcab ... and I can see all your furrowed brows from here so I’ll explain.

When someone upcabs you, they ignore the group of people waiting for taxis and stand up the street in front of everyone and flag the next taxi down. They’re essentially jumping the taxi queue, even though there isn’t a formal queue, more like a mutual understanding among party people as to who was there first.

Bookmark and Share See all 4 comments
  • Hear, Hear ! I totally agree, the ‘UpCab’ happens all over Australia and it’s rude. For the most part, people in general are great when they are out partying, but come the end of the night, the manners go out the window when it’s time to get a cab.

But another thing that would help fix the late night transport problem in Sydney is putting an end to the “3am change over” especially on weekends, long weekends and major events.

Peltroniks of Baulkham Hills, NSW. on Tuesday Jan 18th, at 06:34 PM

  • It’s supoosed to be: first in, first out. However, if you do are in a hurry for a cab, asking the person who’s first in line if you can cut in is usually the proper way.
Also, the taxi driver is supposed to enforce this but they don’t, especially if they think the other people waiting are too drunk or decrepit.

Father’s Day

Damian O’Keeffe on Friday Sep 3rd, at 10:40 AM

What would dad like?

Did you know the first Father’s Day took place in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908? It was to remember 210 fathers who died in a mining accident. It goes by a different name today but the First Father’s Day Church still stands in the area. Thankfully by the 1930s capitalism was in on the deal and the day began to resemble the commercialised affair we’ll be celebrating on Sunday.

The City2Surf is on this Sunday starting with a bang from Hyde Park in the Sydney CBD and ending out of breath at Bondi Beach. It’s a 14km run to test your stamina and fitness. If you’re a visitor to Sydney or you’re a local looking for something to do, a good way to explore the city is on the 555 bus. Ever wondered how hygienic your local restaurants are? Diners in New South Wales will soon find out with the State Government introducing a score on the door hygiene rating for food businesses.

Restaurants taking part in the voluntary program will recieve a score of A, B or C - with A being the highest level of food hygiene and safety - that they must display on their shopfront.

  • Three cheers for the programme, Just for starters ...I’m sick of sharing my food with badly cleaned crockery, cutlery & glasware… I could go on and on.

I can see a lot of positives, but on the negative side, what happens when you are in a block of shops and the culprit of the pest/vermin infestation is the untidy shop next door?, Does the food venue get a bad score even though they are doing their darndest to keep the pests/vermin out....

How often to the scores get updated reviewed, ie when a shop sells or staff change?

A pile of Yellow Pages on the street in Surry Hills, Sydney last week.

What are you using your freshly delivered stack of Yellow Pages for? An attractive stand for your computer monitor? Something to fill the top shelf of your kitchen cupboard? A booster seat for the kids? Emergency toilet paper, perhaps?

With the annual delivery of printed Yellow Pages directories in full swing around the nation, millions of people are facing the annoying reality of having to dispose of the hefty tomes left sitting on their front doorstep.

One person who wants to see an end to the mass delivery of these books is Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.

  • I rung and ‘opted out’ of getting the book.. I was told that they may still deliver it, however if this happens just to leave it on my door step and it will get picked up in a few weeks when they do a run past to pick up any unclaimed ones.  Two months later it still sits on my front door step clearly worse for wear, its going in the bin.

  • FROM A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER’S P.O.V:

DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH REVENUE THESE BOOKS GENERATE FOR SME’S ESPECIALLY???

WITHOUT THE YELLOW & WHITE PAGES, OUR ENTIRE ECONOMY WOULD CRUMBLE. SURE, A SMALL PORTION OF THE POPULATION WOULD PREFER NOT TO RECEIVE A BOOK ON THEIR DOORSTEP EACH YEAR… SO WHAT? HOW HARD IS IT TO CHUCK THE THING IN THE RECYCLING BIN? STOP WHINING AND TRYING TO MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF NOTHING. RECEIVING A BOOK ON YOUR DOORSTEP ONCE A YEAR IS NO MORE ANNOYING THAN HAVING TO WATCH COMMERCIALS BETWEEN BREAKS IN A TV SHOW. IT’S THE WORLD WE LIVE IN AND THE MAJORITY OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC ARE USED TO THE CONTINUAL EXPOSURE TO VARIOUS MEDIAS PUSHING THEIR CLIENT’S PRODUCTS & SERVICES. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT YOU PEOPLE CAMPAIGNING FOR THE ABOLISHMENT OF THESE BUSINESS DIRECTORIES HAVE SOME SORT OF ALTERIOR MOTIVE (I.E. WINNING OVER MARKET SHARE FROM SENSIS=MONEY IN YOUR BACK POCKET)

IT IS ALSO OBVIOUS THAT THIS TRUELOCAL MOB ARE A DIRECT COMPETITOR OF THE YELLOW PAGES??? I’D NEVER EVEN HEARD OF TRUELOCAL UNTIL I PUNCHED IN THEIR WEBSITE JUST NOW. I DO NOT KNOW ANYBODY WHO USES ANYTHING BUT YELLOW PAGES, YELLOW ONLINE, OR GOOGLE TO FIND BUSINESSES (APART FROM WORD OF MOUTH).

AND BY THE WAY, I WOULD QUESTION ANY STATS YOU HAVE TO ‘PROVE’ THE CONTRARY, ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BY TRUELOCAL.

    PFFT GOOD LUCK.

P.S. I BET THIS DOESN’T MAKE IT ONTO YOUR BLOG.

Eating your way through Chinese New Year

Damian O’Keeffe on Wednesday Feb 17th, at 10:02 AM

Well Chinese New Year celebrations have well and truly kicked off, with major events planned throughout Australia to mark the Year of the Tiger. While the Tiger might seem rather fierce apparently those born under the Horse, Dog and Pig sign are the most compatible with Tigers. Snake and Monkey signs are advised to steer clear.

There’s more to Valentine’s Day than flowers and lingerie

Tim Colman on Tuesday Feb 9th, at 10:22 AM

Difficulty in picking the perfect gift is not strictly the domain of men. Both sexes often find themselves bereft of ideas on the eve of Valentine’s Day. While sending flowers or lingerie may appear a no brainer it also indicates you’re probably somewhat short of romantic or interesting ideas. Here’s a few leads which may impress your loved one.

When a bad review can be good

Damian O’Keeffe on Friday Jan 29th, at 10:09 AM

Letting people write reviews on TrueLocal.com.au might seem like a simple idea but it can be more problematic than you’d think.

Some businesses are fearful of reviews because they don’t think it’s fair to let people write anything they want about them. The truth is they can’t – we moderate all reviews for legal reasons, offensive words and so on – which sometimes angers the reviewers.image

  • Thank you for sharing this information and the experience that Mansfield Motors had. This post was helpful in so many ways and certainly reinstated the positives about the rate and review feature.
